Episode 37 - Special Guest: Vital Lacerda, plus Bonfire, The Cost, Barrage, Detective Season One, Root, Ride The Rails
In this episode we welcome the man, the myth, the legend - Vital Lacerda. Vital, of course, is the award-winning designer of heavy games such as Vihnos, The Gallerist, Escape Plan, and this year's hit release On Mars. He kindly gives us an insight into his game design, news on his next game Weather Machine, how he came to create a game with his daughter, and why he generally creates heavier games than other designers. And he even hangs around for our Sizzling Games segment!
Vital impresses everyone with his two Sizzling Games: Bonfire (an ethereal games about guardians of light trying to brighten a dark planet), and The Cost (an economy management game involving health and safety and of all things... asbestos). Adrian was blown away recently by Barrage, Sarah has been sleuthing in Detective: Season One, Def is finding the AI in Root to be Root-hless (see what I did there?), and Steve was driving his passengers mad in Ride The Rails.
In Boardgame Bracket news, we settle the Zombicide vs Scythe battle in our most-voted-for match-up to date. Then it's Def vs Adrian in our next battle: Gaia Project vs Arkham Horror 3rd Edition. Make sure your favourite goes through to the next round by visiting our socials and casting your important vote.
Lastly in everyone's favourite segment, Swear An Oath, Sarah stands tall amongst the rest of the team who all failed their oaths. Sarah cleared Rome&Roll off her shelf of shame and swears a new oath to play Medici: The Dice Game. In this episode, Steve is finally let off the chain. Frankly, you'll be forgiven for skipping this episode as Steve talks about Scythe until Mike and Mitch fall into a coma.
In our massive Sizzling Games segment, Mitch has been rolling and writing through the Trails of Tucana, Mike has been channeling his inner superhero in Marvel United, and Steve has been working up a sweat playing Klask.
If you've ever been overwhelmed by learning new games or reading complicated rule books, then the team discusses the best ways to learn new games without getting freaked out in our Topic Of The Week.
The results are in! We have the first winners for Round 2 as we reveal the results of Through the Ages vs Codenames, and Great Western Trail vs On Mars. And then in what is possibly the most exciting match-up in Round 2 for our podcast team, Mike and Steve go head-to-head in Zombicide vs Scythe. Make sure you head to our socials and vote for your favourite to make sure they go through to Round 3.
In everyone's favourite segment, Swear An Oath, Steve snuck in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle - Defence Against The Dark Arts right before the podcast.
